Why Are Brand Mentions Becoming More Important for Search Visibility?

For years, one of the biggest conversations in SEO has been backlinks. How many do you have? Where do they come from? What is the authority of the site linking to you?

Those questions still matter. But there is another question we are asking much more often now.

Where is your business actually being talked about online?

Search is changing, particularly with the growth of AI search, and we are looking much further than a traditional backlink profile. Brand mentions, reviews, PR coverage, social conversations and references across credible third-party websites are becoming a much bigger part of the picture.

The important word there is credible. Getting your company name mentioned five hundred times across random websites is not the strategy.

    What Is a Brand Mention?

Quite simply, it is another website, publication, platform or person talking about your business. Sometimes that mention includes a backlink. Sometimes it does not.

For traditional SEO, the backlink has usually been the part everyone wanted, and for good reason. Relevant links from strong websites help build the authority of your own site.

But imagine your company is mentioned in a respected industry publication, in an article directly related to the service you provide, and no link is included. Does that mention suddenly have no value? We do not think it should be looked at that way anymore.

Think about how you use an AI platform. You might ask who the best companies for something are, what companies provide a service in Dubai, or who specialises in a particular area.

For an AI platform to confidently associate a company with a subject, service or location, there needs to be information available that supports the connection. Your own website is part of that, but again, your website is you talking about yourself.

If credible sources elsewhere also associate your business with those subjects, there is a much wider pool of information around the brand. This is why AI search optimisation cannot simply mean adding a few questions to your website and hoping ChatGPT starts recommending you.

Not necessarily. A strong backlink from a relevant, credible website is still something we want, and even better when it sits inside an article genuinely discussing your expertise.

What is changing is the obsession with the link being the only thing that matters.

A backlink from a completely unrelated website that exists purely because somebody paid for it might technically be a link. A genuine mention from an important source in your industry might not include one. Which one gives somebody researching your business more confidence? Which one actually associates your company with what you want to be known for?

Where Can Brand Mentions Come From?

There is no single place. They can come from:

  1. Industry publications
  2. News and PR coverage
  3. Business websites, partners and suppliers
  4. Social media and LinkedIn
  5. Reddit and other genuine online discussions
  6. YouTube, podcasts and interviews
  7. Reviews and business directories
  8. Associations and professional organisations
  9. The right opportunities depend entirely on your business. Rather than treating PR as something separate from search, we look for opportunities that genuinely strengthen the wider authority of the business.

    Does Every Mention Have Value?

No. Whenever something becomes valuable for search, people look for ways to scale it.

We saw it with backlinks. If one was good, a hundred must be better. Then came link farms, huge guest-post networks and websites created almost entirely to sell links. Be very careful about repeating that process with brand mentions.

If your company suddenly appears in hundreds of irrelevant conversations on poor-quality websites, what are we really achieving? A mention needs context. A construction company being mentioned in a credible discussion about project delivery makes sense. An aesthetic clinic referenced in conversations about treatments and skin health makes sense. Relevance comes first.

    What About Social Media Mentions?

Social media is where real conversations about brands often happen. Someone recommends a business on LinkedIn. A customer tags a company after using its service. A person asks for recommendations in a Reddit thread. A business is mentioned in a YouTube video.

These are different from traditional backlinks, but they all contribute to the wider presence of a brand online. That does not mean every social mention is a ranking signal. The value is in building a genuine presence and creating more places where your brand is associated with what you actually do.

Can You Create Brand Mentions Yourself?

You can create opportunities for them, which is slightly different.

You can publish useful research or content people want to reference. You can contribute genuine expertise to industry discussions. You can work with publications through PR. You can encourage customers to leave reviews. You can collaborate with relevant businesses and make sure your listings are accurate.

What we would not do is force your company name into conversations simply to collect another mention. People spot it, platforms spot it, and it misses the point.

Your external authority and your own website structure need to work together.

If another source is talking about your business around a particular service, make sure your website has a strong page explaining that service properly. Then support that page with relevant blogs, FAQs, case studies and internal links.

This is something we consider from the beginning with website design and development and ongoing SEO.

We still want strong backlinks. But we also want people talking about the businesses we work with, credible publications mentioning them, genuine reviews, useful social conversations and their expertise appearing outside their own websites, all connecting back to a strong website.

Search is happening everywhere. Your business needs to build authority everywhere that genuinely matters to your customers. If you would like help mapping that out, get in touch.
